Happy May!
The remaining weeks of school will be hectic! This week we'll begin our SBAC testing in math and ELA. The schedule for the testing is:
Day 1 - May 6 (8:15-11:55) - Math
Day 2 - May 7 (8:15-10:15) - ELA
Day 3 - May 12 (during regular math class only) - Math
Day 4 - May 13 (8:15-9:35) - Math
Day 5 - May 14 (ELA test given during regular class time) - ELA
Day 6 - May 15 (8:15-11:55) - ELA
The SBAC is designed to be administered over a longer period of time than the NECAPs, so we are able to incorporate some of the testing into regular class time. Please avoid scheduling appointments during these times and be well rested!

Happy Pi Day and welcome to the last trimester of the year! As we begin the final push for this last trimester, please note these changes in grading practices: final grades will now be calculated solely from summative quizzes and tests. Quizzes and tests will each be worth 50% of the total cumulative score. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. Quizzes will be given every other Friday. Mid-module and end-of-module assessments will be dictated by our progress in each module.
Yes, this means that classwork and homework are formative, so why bother doing it? Classwork and homework is where learning and practice occur. This means that ALL of your learning will be reflected in your quiz and test scores. Remember that quizzes and tests can always be retaken!
I'm also available for extra help during these times:
* before school any day (I'm at school by 7am!)
* Mondays - second recess
* Tuesdays - both recesses and lunch
* Wednesdays - second recess
* Thursdays - first recess
* Fridays - both recesses and lunch
Please let me know if you have any questions. Math on!

Happy MLK Day! I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and are ready to jump back in for the rest of this trimester!
There are some changes to our math curriculum to let you know about. This year the middle school at HES has been using EngageNY as our math curriculum. We will now be using Eureka Math, which is an enhanced version of EngageNY Math. Parents, you may also use Eureka Math Help as a resource to help support your child with math homework. The USDOE and many states have recognized Eureka Math as a comprehensive curriculum with full alignment with the Common Core State Standards.
You may also click on the tab to the right to learn more about specific common core math standards.
I am excited to be a part of the middle school math program at HES! Please let me know your thoughts, concerns, or questions about our program by contacting me at bziegler@wsesu.net.
PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR WEEKLY IXL PRACTICE! Although IXL is considered part of your formative classwork grade, it is excellent practice of computation skills linked to class discussions.

Happy New Year! This year our middle school students will be using EngageNY as their math curriculum. EngageNY is an online curriculum that connects common core standards to real-world math applications. The links above provide specific information about expectations and assignments for sixth-grade math and eighth-grade algebra. Parents, you may also use Eureka Math Help as a resource to help support your child with math homework.

PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR WEEKLY IXL ASSIGNMENT! (Students are expected to spend a total of 30 minutes nightly on math homework. IXL should be a part of that 30 minutes, but not to exceed minutes. Make as much progress as you can within that timeframe.)
